Who's really the head of the household?
From some people's perspective, the head of household is the person who is making the most money. Others say that there is no head of household, and some say that both the husband and wife are the head together. But what does the word of God say? According to 1 Corinthians 11:3, which says, “But I will have you know that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is the man, and the head of Christ is God," it is apparent that the head of the household is the man. We all know this is not a popular belief in this day and age, and there's many reasons for that. One being the media. Growing up watching television shows where the man of the house is always depicted as a goof would make any woman resist the idea of a man being the leader.
The idea that the man, someone who isn't necessarily smarter or more competent than the woman, but for some reason has a higher position, seems unjust to a lot of women. And the idea that we must submit to him seems even more unheard of. If a woman truly believes men are irresponsible, inconsiderate, incompetent goofs, then she will want to be the head of the home and will not want her husband to be. She will want the right to overrule him and veto his decisions because she does not trust that he is capable of leading on his own. In this dynamic, it is the husband who will be in the submissive role, not the wife.
Once a man becomes submissive to his wife, his woman will soon lose respect for him, and eventually lose interest in him altogether. Women fantasize about having such power over a man, but they soon become bored, and even disgusted, with a man that they can rule over in such a way. Make no mistake about it, women do have power in their marriage. They first and foremost have the power of influence. While they may not be the final decision-maker, they greatly influence what decision will be made. Secondly, God gave women authority over the children. Raising a human being from birth gives women far more power and influence than they can ever have over a man.
Women must invest their power and influence in the right places. Trying to control or rule men has never rendered women the results they desire. And when a man is a hard, insensitive ruler, he also doesn't get the results he desires from women. But when he is considerate, reasonable, and firm, he will make a great leader. When wives are submissive to this type of husband, he will respect her even more than he would if she were the type to attempt to be the head over him. Little do some women realize, the respect and love they wish to receive from their husband is accessible by simply honoring his position. He will love and honor her for loving and honoring him.
